Health

We are the only ones who can take responsibility for our health and the health of our families and improve it wherever possible. Small changes not only in the food we eat but the way we live can make a difference. Exercise can start by getting off the couch to change the channel on the TV instead of sitting pressing buttons on the remote and while we’re on the subject, a violent movie does not encourage mental and physical relaxation! Look at yourself. Are you healthy, happy and full of energy with an enthusiasm for life? We have the right to be healthy and the responsibility to take care of ourselves.

Food

I believe in striving to eat as natural as our lifestyle allows. Nothing over the top, drink good quality water, grow and eat your veggies, cut out sugar, stimulants and anything you can’t pronounce or doesn’t sound like food such as Monosodium Glutamate. Reduce your intake of red meat – Mutton is apparently the best choice here and when choosing chocolate, the darker the better. Make a note of healthy changes you intend to make and then tick the item off the list as you achieve each goal. Don’t even attempt to change everything at once as you’ll be totally miserable. Keep it simple. If you have a choice of two plates of food, choose the healthiest option.

Labels
Do you read labels? We’re all in such a rush that we grab what we need without even thinking of the ingredients in what we’re buying. Sometimes, I read a label and cannot help but shake my head. The big question is, “Is there any FOOD in here?” One item I looked at contained Colourants, Flavourants, Flavour Enhancer, Monosodium Glutamate, oh yes, at the top of the list is starch, salt and sugar. There we go, spotted some mushrooms there. How nutritious this all sounds – or does it? We're not out to ban all ready-made meals, tins and foods served in packets but we can try to make just one extra home-made meal a week - from scratch.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils are precious health-enhancing liquids extracted from plants which work in harmony with our daily lives and our planet. They can be used with enormous benefits for:

The Muscular System
The Cardiovascular System
The Digestive System
The Endocrine System
The Integumentary System (Skin)
The Lymphatic System
The Nervous System
The Respiratory System

Grapefruit essential oil can be most useful for water retention whilst Frankincense or Grapefruit assist with food cravings and Bergamot assists with mood swings [Komori T, Fujiwara R, Tanida M, et al. Effects of citrus fragrance on immune function and depressive states. Neuroimmunomodulation 1995; 2:174-180]. Essential Oils such as Bergamot can benefit mood swings, Basil and Lemon help with concentration and cooling essential oils such as German Chamomile can be used in the form of a spritzer to help cool the body.

Geraniums are Indigenous to South Africa. The Rose-scented Pelargonium grow to about 1 metre high and has pointed leaves which are serrated at the edges. The flowers are small and pink. (Can't see the photograph? Click here.)

Cultivation:
Propagate from cuttings in early summer and add a good amount of compost when planting - preferably in a semi-shaded area. They are easy to grow but appreciate good drainage and moderate watering. They attract insects such as butterflies and bees.

Use to line shrub borders and areas where people passing can brush against them to release their lovely fragrance or plant in areas where it is easy to pick from the plant to crush the leaves between your fingers and inhale the exquisite rose aroma which is released.

Essential Oil
Extraction of the Essential Oil is by steam distillation.

Beneficial for the nervous system and stress-related disorders such as headaches, stomach aches and debility, whilst relieving tension and anxiety, lifting the spirits and dispelling melancholy and depression. It has a balancing effect on the emotions and is therefore beneficial for treating mood swings. Its antiseptic properties help prevent infections to cuts.

The Flower Essence
The Complete Floral Healer by Anne McIntyre describes the benefits of Geranium beautifully! "Geranium is for those who feel down and depressed, lacking colour in their life. Geranium helps to lift the spirits and to bring joy and happiness to your daily activities. It is also helpful for those who need strength and motivation to bring plans and projects into action. It helps to get things started in a well ordered way by providing the energy and clarity that is needed."
