Dear Health-Lover

Pause with me for a moment to picture a courtyard paved with random stone, a tiled roof and a row of Lemon trees planted in terracotta tubs. What could be more Mediterranean? The Mediterranean coast of France is regularly struck by frost. It is therefore essential to be able to move small lemon trees to a sheltered position for the winter. Pots can be used for plants requiring a great deal of water and a dish can be placed beneath the pot to prevent the water draining away. Lemon trees can be planted in your garden with rows of Lavender between them to keep away aphids and whitefly,  or in a pot on the patio or in the courtyard.

The Lemon is a small evergreen tree which is native to Asia. It is now cultivated worldwide including America, Israel, Italy and South Africa. The Eureka Lemon Tree is the best choice for cold gardens prone to frost.

Use in the Garden:

“To make a good spray for mildew and aphids, chop up lemon skins and cover with boiling water and some fresh chopped lemon leaves and cool overnight. Next morning strain, add half a cup of soap powder for every bucket of brew and use as a spray. This spray will also chase flies, especially in stables and chicken houses." Margaret Roberts – Companion Planting.
Note: A biodegradable soap powder would be ideal.

Use in the kitchen:

Natural, Healthy Lemonade:

2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
1/4 teaspoon Stevia Powder or about 2 Stevia Leaves - they're very sweet
250ml Filtered Water
Fresh Mint Leaves
Ice cubes
Sufficient for 1 glass - increase quantities according to amount of Lemonade required.

If fresh Stevia is to be used, allow the leaves to stand in 250ml warm water and cool before adding lemon juice, mint and ice cubes. The herb Stevia is available from Garden Centres - Look out for the Herb's Herbs labels - Stevia rebaudiana.

Food: Squeeze juice over fish to neutralize the odor or onto foods such as bananas, apples and avocados as a short-term preservative to prevent browning. Use to marinate meat before cooking.

Cleaning: Use to clean, deodorize, remove grease and disinfect the kitchen. Mix the juice with a little sodium bicarbonate to remove stains on plastic food storage containers. A halved lemon dipped in salt or baking powder can be used to brighten copper cookware. The acid cuts through the tarnish and the abrasives assist the cleaning. When washing glassware, add a little lemon juice to the rinse water to add extra sparkle.

Extraction: The Essential Oil is expressed from the rind of the lemon. About 3,000 lemons are needed to obtain 1kg of essential oil.

Properties:

Antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, carminative, antimelanistic (can be used for brown skin spots but remember to dilute correctly) anti-inflammatory (can be dabbed onto insect bites but remember that Lemon Essential Oil is phototoxic; therefore avoid exposure to sunlight 1 hour after skin application.

Body Facts: The Mind

Lemon Essential Oil has wonderful benefits for the mind and emotions. It has been found to stimulate the brain and help with concentration and memory. Lemon helps to keep the mind clear and alert, assists in making decisions and brings clarity and light when the mind becomes foggy and confused. Tests were carried out by a fragrance manufacturer in Japan and it was found that when Lemon Essential Oil was diffused into the offices, 54% less keyboard mistakes were made.

Lemon prevents the spread of infection and is wonderful for clearing the air of unpleasant odours. Pure lemon Essential Oil can be purchased for use in the vaporizer in your office; however Essential Harmony’s Office range includes Essential Oils of Niaouli, Clary Sage, Lavender and Lemon. I can honestly say that I simply cannot work a day in my office without my Office Essential Oils.
